Singing in The Basement : Underground Music Movement as A Sub-Multiculturalism Society

Multi-culture defined as a transformation of one culture into another through a blending process of two or more culture, are the basis of our modern society. This modern society has created a new culture that blends all our differences in one main purpose to unite us through one final goal. A goal that can be different for each society, it can be a massive goal such as to become a nation or a less big goal like to unite through the same taste or vision in art, sport and even lifestyle.

For example, the underground music movement is a community that primary unite through their same taste and vision for music. This community emerges from the midst of a multicultural society that already has no more room for expression because they already have their form of music expression in mainstream music culture. Yes, multicultural society has somewhat produce a new culture to unite everyone in their multicultural society. And the underground music movement release themselves from the mainstream vision to build and live their own vision of music. So it can be concluded that a sub-multi-culture society can rise from the main multi-culture society that said can accommodate all culture.

This phenomenon happen because in a multicultural society where almost every person is the same as the other, some rebel needs an identity to define them in the mass produced culture of multiculturalism. And this is where the underground music movement gives their “followers” an identity, an ideology, and even a life. And of course it is the youth – or at least the soul of the youth – that leads this movement of freedom.
